My boyfriend and I were excited to do omakase after having a delightful meal here once before and although mostly ignored, we were happy with the quality of the sushi that was served to us - the problem? We both were served about 8-10 pieces of sushi + 1 appetizer and we were charged $90 a piece. It was such a ridiculous rip off. The Japanese patrons around us were served much more food, with much more care at a much faster rate. If you're white and don't speak Japanese, don't sit at the bar and don't do omakase here.

shhhhhhhhh.......I hope this place remains hidden. Last thing I want is a great sushi place that requires 1 month reservation or constant busy phone signal (i.e. Nobu). Thiis place rocks! The best sushi in Gotham. Truely the sushi is buttery and melts in your mouth. The quality, the decor, and service combined is one of the best. Their sushi chef is truely amazing. Their appetizers are also good, especially their duck roll, but just go straight to the sushi/sashimi if you don't have much to spend. My mouth is watering just writing this. Expect to spend a good $30-40 dollars with tip, which I think is a bargain for that kind of quality.

After reading all the review, we thought we would give the place a shot. but.. this place is def. over-rated. the sushi was ok. not the freshest fish i've tried, and way over priced!

it is not "americanized" as the reviewer stated - i think they should note what it it exactly that they think is not japanese. at any rate, shimizu has solid, consistent, great quality fish at a price that is not cheap but not over the top.
if you're a sushi lover you must try it (but only at the sushi bar doing omakase). if you aren't a big sushi fan or you don't sit at the sushi bar, it might not be as great.

After several more visits, I've decided that Shimizu is absolutely wonderful. Of all the famous sushi restaurants, the food most similarly resembles Jewel Bako. It is fairly priced, neither a bargain nor a ripoff, with high quality sushi, hot dishes, and desserts.
This place has become my favorite regular spot to dine at.

Shimizu-san, who used to work at Sushi Zen, opened up Shimizu last fall. I have only two criticisms of this otherwise excellent establishment.
Though presentation, service, and fish quality are of the highest level, the pickled ginger and rice are not. Now this is not to say they are subpar, its just the texture and taste of the rice pales in comparison to Yasuda and Bako's perfectly vinegared grains.
Other than that, i can find nothing wrong with Shimizu. I had a $100 omakase and though the bill was large, I'd still consider it relatively inexpensive considering the quantity of high quality sushi I received. In fact I almost felt like Shimizu was embarassed to give me such an expensive bill, but after serving roughly 4 hot appetizers, 1 sashimi platter, 12 pieces of sushi, and green tea icecream the size of the bill was inevitable.

Shimizu can compete head to head with every top tier sushi places in NYC. The o-toro and chu-toro are honestly comparable to yasuda and kuruma, and the Kanpachi is out of this world. A sublime experience, plus I like the fairly minimalist ambiance and that it is not a power meal destination.

After disappointing lunch and dinner at Japonica and Nobu, respectively, I decided to go with a friend to Shimizu for dinner (after reading a glowing recommendation from halo). Dinner was excellent. Literally, the sushi is so fresh that it melts in your mouth. We had the duck spring roll as appetizer. Excellent. Then, we had the Chef seasonal special Sushi plate. It was excellent, but little disappointed that it did't contain toro or himachi. So ordered both ala carte. Will come back!!!
