Wonderful fish in a really attractive, but small setting. Very talented staff at the sushi bar.

The food is great, sushis are among the best in New York, and the decor is very nice. However, the service is poor, and the attitude of the lady who seems to be the boss (Grace) is a real turn off. And if you book at the sushi bar, you usually get a table - it happened to me twice - and it does not seem to bother them at all. Kurumazusushi is for me a much better place with the same quality.

this is like a boutique sushi joint. fancy presentation, tiny portions in a beautiful space. they had 3 different TORO selections including O-TORO which has been the standard by which i judge all other raw fish delicacies. i didn't pay the bill but I'm sure it was heavy. hard to get reservations I understand. worthy of a special occasion.

for the sushi enthusiast, order a la carte and you will be very happy. the tasting menus do give you good value and high quality sushi. some great vegetable items are on the menu. as for service, many of the waiters aspire to remember your name, even if you go only twice a year.

Top flight. Several of the types of sushi we tried were as good as we've ever had. Fatty blue fin and uni were sensational. Only small quibble was that a few of the things in the omikase weren't among our favorites, but then we added a few items a la carte and were most satisfied. The decor is beautiful, but the table experience is like a regular restaurant. For the more intimate sushi experience you should try to get a seat at the bar.
We found none of the attitude other people have mentioned and felt that it was a reasonable price (omikase for two plus extras and sake about $160) for great sushi.

A sushi restaurant cannot of course be all things to all people nor should it strive to. But the imperative thing a sushi restaurant should do and especially when charging the prices this one does is to be consistent in the quality and creativity of their offerings. Regrettably Jewel Bako waivers in both areas. Thus one endures an unconscionable wait to experience yet another New York Restaurent self-sabotaged by its own hype. It is pretty though and if you love her and she loves sushi... well love is blind.

Best meal I have had in NYC! Think I am crazy? The food is small but perfectly served, and Jack and Grace stalk the scene and make the place feel very intimate. Modern and trendy, sleek and sexy. You might pay 200 for 15 bucks worth of fish, but in this setting, and this crowd....who cares!

Jewel Bako has a very nice atmosphere. A very attentive staff and excellent quality sushi. Unfortunately it is quite overpriced, has rather small portions, and not much of a variety. I've had sushi of equal or better quality while spending much less than I did here. If your primary concern is value then I would not recommend Jewel Bako.

Some people on this board want to go out and have a sushi experience, while others want to have sushi as dinner. Yasuda/Kuruma Zushi/Masa won't be traveled to accidentally by those lookin for just dinner(and Gari will be appreciated by either group)...but apparently Jewel Bako might, and that's probably where the bad reviews come from.

Bako's head chef is down to earth and always willing to converse about the types of fish he has available. On my visit, he used a japanese fish encyclopedia to illustrate what each piece was.

The chef recommended the uni that night and just like he promised, it was the best I'd ever had. The next time I'm considering heading off to spend $100+ on a sushi experience, I'll be sure to consider Bako.
